Here are the 9 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

The most “mixed bag” of a mixed bag we’ve ever seen on a single night.

A real rollercoaster of quality and genres, but there’s no denying they’re all worth your time, in one way or another.

That is, assuming, you’re not going to the cinema. Which you should, and if you are, then you should check out the latest episode of our movie review show, The Big Reviewski:

However, if you are sat in, here’s what you should be watching:

SUNDAY 22 JULY

Die Another Day – RTE Two – 6.05pm

Not a great start, we’ll admit. Because it is a truly terrible film. But that is almost why we recommend you watch it, to fully appreciate that awfulness. It turned 15 years old a while back, and we went into detail as to why we should be happy it even exits.

The Imitation Game – Film 4 – 6.45pm

Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley and Mark Strong star in this true story of a genius code-breaker who may be the only man to help crack an impossible German code, one that could help bring an end to WWII.

Rango – E4 – 6.50pm

A supremely weird animated movie, with Johnny Depp as a sheltered chameleon who gets lost during a move, and ends up accidentally becoming the sheriff of a small town of animals.

Legend – Film 4 – 9.00pm

Two Tom Hardys for the price of one! We’re big fans here, obviously.

Patriot Games – Universal TV – 9.00pm

Harrison Ford is Jack Ryan (after Alec Baldwin, but before Ben Affleck and Chris Pine), a CIA operative who is singled out by Sean Bean’s IRA member, after Ford thwarts an attack in London that results in Bean’s brother being killed.

The Chronicles Of Riddick – ITV4 – 9.00pm

The sequel to Pitch Black has an insanely huge budget, this time with Vin Diesel no longer running from blind monster aliens, but instead running across entire universes in order to stop an evil race of Space Nazis from taking everything over.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – BBC One – 9.00pm

Aka the 5th one, aka the one where it starts off with Cruise hanging off the side of a plane. We spoke to Cruise’s stunt coordinator to see how they pulled that off, and you can read all about that right here.

Mamma Mia! – RTE One – 9.30pm

Considering the sequel has just arrived in cinemas, this is as good a time as any to catch up on the original, with Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and our own Pierce Brosnan giving it ABBA welly!

Red Heat – ITV4 – 12.20am (after midnight)

Arnie plays a Russian detective who travels to Chicago and is forced to team up with a local cop (Jim Belushi) in order to track down a Russian gangster who killed both of their partners. A real old school action-comedy, that goes quite hard in on the violence quota.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
