In the biggest transfer news of the day, Dublin radio stalwarts, Dermot and Dave are leaving 98FM.

Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore have announced that they are to quit their 12-year tenure at Dublin’s 98FM to take up a new role presenting a show on Today FM. Dermot and Dave (pictured below with myself) have long been the biggest thing on 98FM, moving from their breakfast show slot seamlessly into their new drive-time slot.

They have a legion of fans and it’s their on-air dynamism and chemistry which has earned them that. Never a pair to take themselves too seriously, their ability to keep people entertained in between songs has won them many admirers.

Dermot Whelan, who would be best known outside of Dublin as the former host of the Republic of Telly, teamed up with Dave Moore back in 2002 to present the early morning breakfast show. The show then moved to a later drive-time slot and again, it was a huge success. It seemed inevitable that they would eventually go national, so today’s news is not that much of a surprise.

Commenting on the news, Dave Moore said: “98fm gave us the chance to develop and grow. But taking the chemistry that Dermot and I have to the entire country on Today FM is an amazing opportunity. It’s the station we’ve admired for years and we know we’ll really enjoy making more great radio every weekday and we hope Ireland enjoys it too!”

Dermot Whelan added: “Other broadcasters have come knocking over the years to try and attract us away but to be honest, the creative track record and reputation of Today FM over so many years made it a simple enough decision to join their stellar line-up. “We’re very excited about moving to Today FM and look forward to having the craic with a wonderful national audience”.

Speaking about the duo’s move to Today FM, Peter McPartlin, CEO of Today FM said, “Today FM has always prided itself on a strong line-up of personalities that are loved by listeners right across the country. Given their pedigree, it’s a real coup for us to add Dermot and Dave to that existing pool of talent. We’re all very excited about what this pair will bring to the station”.
