The new show premieres this week.

Aidan Gillen continues to build a fantastic career for himself Stateside, thanks to the likes of HBO’s Game Of Thrones and The Wire, as well as being honoured with the Oscar Wilde Award this February, paying tribute to his acting career so far.

But his latest project is definitely taking him in a new direction…

Project Blue Book finds Gillen playing Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a college professor who gets caught up in “the true, Top Secret investigations into Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and related phenomena conducted by the United States Air Force from 1952-1969”.

Hynek, in case you didn’t know, came up with the terminology “close encounters”, and served as technical supervisor on Spielberg’s sci-fi classic Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, as well as appearing as a scientist in that movie’s climax.

Gillen will be joined by Neal McDonagh (Minority Report, Desperate Housewives), Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries), Laura Mennell (The Man In The High Castle), while Robert Zemekis (director of Back To The Future, Castaway, and What Lies Beneath to name just a few) is on executive producing duties.

The first episode of the show premieres on the History Channel in the US on Tuesday 8 January, with an Ireland/UK release date still to be confirmed.
