There was a lot of love for Billy Murphy after the latest episode of The Young Offenders

Paul Moore

Billy Murphy

People want him to have his own show. We also got a lovely local story about a dog too.

How in the name of God do you categorise a character like Billy Murphy?

Right from the start of The Young Offenders, Cork’s most lovable/terrifying psychopath was always an integral part of the show, but as we saw in the Season 1 finale when he hijacked the bus, there’s a softer side to Billy that’s rarely seen.

Then again, he might just climb through your window with a bottle of milk, or jump up and down on your rubbish.

Why? Well, he might owe you one. You know, one!

When JOE caught up with the cast of The Young Offenders before the start of Season 2, they were all glowing about Shane Casey’s fantastic performance as Billy.

“He’s always a bit on edge,” said Alex Murphy (Conor).

“You can’t quite tell if they’re friends with him or not. There’s a weird balance to it because he can do stuff for you as well, he’s a good asset to have as a friend but he’d probably throw you under the bus as well!”

“Shane brings that as well. Just when you’re acting with him, he’s a very unpredictable actor – in the best way. He always keeps you on your toes and constantly gives you different things to work with. Shane’s great like that,” added Chris Walley (Jock).

Well, the most recent episode saw all the qualities that make Billy Murphy such a beloved character come to the fore.

As for the story about Shep the dog, people were absolutely bawling.

Laughter and scenes that warm the heart, just what The Young Offenders does best.
