Ballywalter, the debut movie of comedian and Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty, is airing on TV tonight (Friday, 22 May).
The 2022 Irish comedy drama follows Eileen (Seána Kerslake, A Date for Mad Mary), a sardonic university dropout whose dreams of a successful life in London have died.
Back at home in Belfast with her mum and pregnant sister, she is trying to make ends meet by working as an unlicensed driver in her ex-boyfriend's minicab.
Every week, Eileen takes a booking from Shane (Kielty), a man in his 40s, who is bruised by the recent breakdown of his marriage.
In the wake of his divorce, he attempts to rebuild himself by trying out stand-up comedy.
Spending time together on the road between Belfast and Shane's home in the Co. Down village of Ballywalter, shuttling back and forth over several months, the two lost souls form an unlikely connection, helping each other confront their demons.
Directed by Prasanna Puwanarajah (Too Much) and written by Stacey Gregg (Here Before), Ballywalter earned rave reviews.
In particular, critics singled out Kerslake and Kielty's lead performances and the movie's "bittersweet" story for praise.
Ballywalter is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow night on RTÉ One at 12.25am. It is also available to stream on the RTÉ Player.
