EXCLUSIVE: Barry Keoghan is terrifying in Netflix’s new Top Boy scene

Rory Cashin

Top Boy has got itself a truly intimidating bad guy here…

Top Boy has proven to be a huge hit for Netflix in the years since it took over its production. The first two seasons, which aired on Channel 4 between 2011 and 2013, were very well received, but it wasn’t until Netflix’s first season of the show streamed in 2019 that it truly took off.

Executive produced by Aubrey Graham (better known as megastar Drake to you and me), as well as famed directed Yann Demange (who recently had his brilliant thriller re-added to Netflix), Top Boy tells the epic crime tale of Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson) and their attempts to build London’s greatest criminal empire.

If you’re not caught up yet, all 18 episodes of the first two Netflix seasons are available to watch right now, ahead of the arrival of the third and final season of the show. One of the biggest new additions to the final set of episodes is Ireland’s own Brian Gleeson (Peaky Blinders, Bad Sisters), as well as recent Best Actor Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan.

The final episodes of Top Boy arrive very soon

Details around Keoghan’s character are being kept pretty close to Netflix’s chest at the moment. All we know is that his name is “Jonny” and he appears to be absolutely terrifying. As for what else to expect from the final season of Top Boy, here is Netflix’s official synopsis of the upcoming episodes:

“Sully’s actions at the end of the last series have rewritten his business rules with Dushane. As new shared problems arise, everything they’ve built comes under threat from forces outside and within their empire. Can they coexist by the rules of the road they’ve lived by their whole lives in a world that is changing before them? Or can there only be one Top Boy?”

Additionally, Ronan Bennett, the Irish novelist and screenwriter from Belfast, who created Top Boy had the following to say about Keoghan’s casting:

“Sometimes you can’t believe your luck. I was writing an Irish part for the final season of Top Boy when Barry Keoghan got in touch to say he was a huge fan of the show and could he be in it. I know Barry knocks on doors when there’s a project he is passionate about, and I was only too happy to open this one.

“Barry brings intensity and authenticity to everything he does and we were delighted when he came on board. Our next job was to find the right actor to hold his own alongside Barry as his partner in crime. In Brian Gleeson we found that and much, much more. He is a remarkable actor, and, as audiences will see, together he and Barry make a very menacing duo.”

All episodes of the third and final season of Top Boy land on Netflix at 8am on Thursday 7 September.
