Here are the 5 best movies on TV this evening

best movies on tv tonight

It’s probably no harm we’re in for another glorious evening.

Because, if this evening’s TV guide is anything to go by, it’s as if the various stations knew the weather was going to be great and figured there wasn’t much point loading the schedule with movies to watch.

Or, they knew the final episodes of Normal People would be on RTÉ tonight and they wouldn’t be able to compete.

In any case, we’ve still plucked together a handful of movies to watch if you absolutely must get your movie fix, three of which come pretty highly recommended.

Here goes…

G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra – Film4, 6.45pm

There are loads of well-known names in the cast – Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Ecclestone amongst them – but sadly, that’s about all this has going for it.

Jarhead – Sky Atlantic, 9pm

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a US marine struggling to deal with life on base during the Gulf War. Directed by Sam Mendes, it’s not perfect, but it’s certainly watchable.

Superbad – Comedy Central, 9pm

Seems to be on the box at least once a week these days, a testament to its popularity, re-watchability and status as one of the best comedies of modern times.

American Made – Film 4, 9pm

Tom Cruise stars as Barry Seal, a former commercial pilot who went on to fly missions for the CIA and subsequently became a smuggler for the infamous Medellin drug cartel.

Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Cruise is brilliant in what is a very entertaining romp.

Smokey and the Bandit, Part 3, ITV4, 11pm

Even The Godfather struggled with a third instalment so Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 is in good company.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
