It’s Saturday and there are some fantastic films on today.

Or Saturdaze as the kids say these days. But I prefer Saturday. It’s serious because Saturdays and movies on TV are serious business.

And here in JOE we take them seriously gravely earnestly solemnly…

Let’s take a look at what movies are on TV this evening.

12 Years A Slave – Channel 4 – 9pm

Powerful, unflinching drama featuring an astounding performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Dirty Grandpa – E4 – 9pm

A truly terrible movie.

Saving Private Ryan – Sky One – 9pm

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. If you haven’t seen it, watch it.

First Blood – ITV4 – 9pm

John Rambo is a violent man.

Layer Cake – Film4 – 9pm

Before he was Bond, Daniel Craig turned heads in this gritty and quite convoluted London crime drama.

Inside I’m Dancing – TG4 – 9.15pm

You probably watched it in secondary school. James McAvoy stars in this film about two men who fight to overcome disabilities and live exciting, independent lives.

Bridge of Spies – RTÉ2 – 9.20pm

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. If that isn’t enough to convince you then there’s no point saying any more.

The Meg – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Described by JOE as the “greatest movie of all time… for about three minutes“.

Yardie – BBC Two – 9.45pm

In Idris Elba’s feature directing debut, this tells the story of a Jamaican immigrant in London who becomes consumed with avenging the murder of his older brother.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day – UTV – 10.45pm

“I need your clothes, boots and your motorcycle.”

10 Cloverfield Lane – Film4 – 11.10pm

John Goodman is incredibly scary in this tense thriller.

The Patriot – RTÉ2 – 11.40pm

Mel Gibson forsakes his violent past to settle down with his family. But when the Brits kill his son, he’s dragged back into violence in the American War of Independence.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
