An all-star murder mystery and 7 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

Now that the cinemas are fully reopened, it is time to enjoy some big movies on the big screen!

The last full week of January is upon us, so you might want to celebrate with some new shows or films, but how will you know which new arrivals are worth your time?

That is exactly what you’ll find out in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which can be watched in full below, or you can skip to the cinema reviews (4:00), home entertainment recommendations (11:10), and classic re-watches (20:10).

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 28 January.

SING 2

This animated sequel to the hit 2016 jukebox musical sees the gang take their act to Las Vegas (kinda) in an attempt to bring it to an even bigger audience. Check out how Bono’s arrival to the story ends up giving us one of 2022’s most emotional cinematic moments so far.

BELFAST

We actually forgot to mention this last week, but it isn’t like this Jamie Dornan/Caitriona Balfe-starring, Oscar-favourited drama really needed our help!

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

THE AFTERPARTY

From the creators of 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie, this all-star murder mystery has a detective (Tiffany Haddish) attempting to solve the murder of a celebrity (Dave Franco) following a high school reunion.

The first three episodes land on Apple TV+ on Friday, 28 January, with the remainder of the series arriving each Friday after that.

THE WOMAN IN THE HOUSE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE GIRL IN THE WINDOW

Kristen Bell (The Good Place) fronts this satire/homage of those mysterious movies based on mysterious books that have become massively popular in the last decade or so. Expect nods to Gone Girl, The Woman in the Window, The Girl on the Train, etc. Check out our full review here.

All eight episodes will be available on Netflix from Friday, 28 January.

MONSTER HUNTER

Milla Jovovich reunites with her Resident Evil director for another video game adaptation, this time finding herself magically transported to a parallel universe filled with huge monsters. And guess who has to hunt them…?

Monster Hunter will be available with your NOW Cinema Membership from Friday, 28 January.

MARVEL’S HIT MONKEY

Definitely one of the quirkier entries in the Marvel universe so far, this animated comedy feels like it has more in common with Archer or Solar Opposites than, say, Captain America. The voice cast includes Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Munn and George Takei.

All episodes from the first season will be available to watch on Disney+ from Wednesday, 26 January.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section, with Rory and Eoghan each picking a movie for you to enjoy at home this weekend, and putting it to a public vote to decide which is the better pick…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – THE GREY

Turning ten years old this week, Liam Neeson’s survival thriller is arguably the very best movie he’s ever done.

The Grey is available to watch on Rakuten TV and Apple TV.

Eoghan’s Pick – THE ROCK

Nic Cage + Sean Connery + Alcatraz + Michael Bay explosions = A damn good time.

The Rock is available to watch on Prime Video and Disney+.
