If you haven't watched it yet, we really can't recommend Big Little Lies enough.
The murder-mystery series had some big heavy hitters - Reece Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shaileen Woodley, Alexander Skaarsgard, Adam Scott, Laura Dern - involved, and while it was pinned to the the spine of a "Whodunnit?", it was actually much, much more than that.
We've already
written at length about the importance of the show, and the show's director Jean-Marc Vallee spoke to
The Hollywood Reporter about how difficult it was to film some of the more controversial scenes in the series:
"I wish I could say [episode] seven [the finale] was my favorite, but for trivia night, everything we had to do meant shooting at night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The five leads and their husbands were there, as well as the supporting parts and 200-something extras that we had to choreograph. We had to shoot from all these different perspectives. Everybody is watching each other, so that was a challenge — to nail the humor and the drama and the violence."
But looking forward, it looks like things will be getting even darker.
Vallee is teaming up with Amy Adams for the series adaptation of Sharp Objects, a book from the same author as Gone Girl.
Adams will play a reporter confronts the psychological demons from her past when she returns to her hometown to cover a violent murder, and Vallee is very excited about the project:
"The material is very dark. I was impressed that Amy wanted to do this and play this crazy character. She is such a professional and so devoted to her art and what she's doing — the face, the nuances. I'm the first to witness the magic."
Filming on the project began in March, with Vallee directing all eight-episodes, so we should probably expect it to appear on HBO/Sky Atlantic before the year is out.
