Liked by critics and featuring an A-lister in a lead role, the 2022 movie was sadly not a box-office hit. It's now ripe for discovery.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 10 October) is Bones and All, the 2022 romantic horror thriller from director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Challengers).

Based on a novel by Camille DeAngelis, the film stars Taylor Russell (Hope). She plays Maren, a young woman afflicted with a strange vampire-like condition that leaves her craving to eat human flesh.

Shortly after her 18th birthday, Maren's father (André Holland, Moonlight), who has grown tired of covering up for his daughter's crimes, abandons her. This leaves the teenager to embark on a road trip across America to find her estranged mother (Chloë Sevigny, Zodiac).

Along Maren's travels, she meets a young man named Lee (Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme). He has the same cannibalistic urges as her, which helps the pair form a strong bond.

That said, Maren also encounters Sully on her travels, an older, enigmatic fellow 'eater' (Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, The Outfit), who forms a sinister obsession with her.

The performances are stellar too, particularly Russell's star-making turn as a young woman trying to find herself amid unfamiliar, often scary new surroundings. Rylance and Michael Stuhlbarg (Digger) also leave a lasting impression playing two of the creepier villains of recent memory.

With an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie deserves a bigger audience than it got in cinemas.

Bones and All is airing on TV tonight on BBC One at 11.50pm. It's also currently available to stream on Mubi.
