Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 4 October) is Challengers, one of 2024's buzziest and best-reviewed films.
Directed by Oscar-nominee Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name), it stars Josh O'Connor (The Crown), Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Zendaya (Dune) and tells the story of a love triangle in the competitive world of tennis.
Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan in the movie, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and "a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court".
"Married to a champion on a losing streak (Faist), Tashi's strategy for her husband's redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (O'Connor) - his former best friend and Tashi's former boyfriend," the plot synopsis adds.
"As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win?"
Written by Justin Kuritzkes (Queer), the screenplay for Challengers is a funny, smart and steamy portrait of a trio of people equally competitive in their personal and romantic lives as they are on the tennis court.
Adding to the lively love (or lust) triangle story is Guadagnino's dynamic, stylish direction, a pulse-pounding techno soundtrack by Oscar-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) and the three brilliant central performances.
A word-of-mouth box office hit upon release, the film holds an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Challengers is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ2 at 9pm. It is also available to rent on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
