Time for our annual “This will be next year’s most fun movie!” prediction

We’ve been pretty good at predicting them for the last two years running.

Before we go any further, that main image is from Denzel Washington’s 2006 time travel movie Deja Vu, in case you thought it was part of our prediction. No, it is just a fun movie, with lots of explosions, and a good way to get your attention.

Now, moving on.

Predicting the best movies of each year can sometimes be very easy.

Looking back over 2019 (so far), it was clear that the likes of The Irishman or Once Upon A Time in Hollywood or Joker or Avengers: Endgame were going to be up on the Best Ofs.

However, trying to predict which movies will be the most fun… now that is something that is a little harder to forecast.

JOE have tried for the last few years to do just that, with what you might call….. mixed results.

For 2018, we said that the movie to watch would be The Meg, the giant shark action thriller. That movie ended up making over a half-a-billion at the box office, so clearly the world was paying attention.

For 2019, we went with Crawl, the alligators-in-a-hurricane movie. While that wasn’t quite the same size of box office behemoth, Tarantino himself recently told Deadline that he thinks it is his favourite movie of the year.

So that is two for two, in our books.

Time to see if we can make it a trilogy of accurate predictions with…. Cash Truck.

Admittedly, not the most creative of titles, and as you may have guessed, unlike our two previous picks, there are no big scary creatures popping out of the water to eat people.

However, it does have a connection to one of our other predictions, so….. there’s that.

A remake of 2004 French thriller Le Convoyeur, this new movie is directed by the increasingly-busy Guy Ritchie, who has gangster movie The Gentlemen coming out just eight months after his box office hit Aladdin.

And, within the same year (no set release date yet, but since it is already filming, we’re guessing close to Christmas 2020), he’ll have Cash Truck, which will reunite him with his Lock, Stock and Snatch star Jason Statham!

What is it all about, you might ask? Well, here is the synopsis: “The plot follows H (that’ll be Statham), a cold and mysterious character working at a cash truck company responsible for moving hundreds of millions of dollars around Los Angeles each week.”

What else do we know? Statham will be joined on screen by Holt McCallany (better known as Bill Tench in Mindhunter) and Scott Eastwood (Fast & Furious 8, Pacific Rim: Uprising).

You might be asking “What is going to make this the most fun movie of 2020?” Well, much like The Meg and Crawl, we’re not 100% sure, but mostly we get the impression that Statham – who has been having a really fun time lately between The Meg, Spy, and Hobbs & Shaw – reuniting with Ritchie will mean a lot of fun by itself (we’re all collectively forgetting that Revolver is a thing that exists), but there is also potential for this to be a fully violent, properly gritty action thriller, like Heat or Collateral.

So yes. Cash Truck is getting our early vote for most fun movie of 2020. But first things first, that title is going to need a rethink…
