Writer and director Guy Ritchie made his name with smart, gangster movies set in the UK.
Kicking off with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels before moving on to Snatch and the underrated RocknRolla, it was always only going to be a matter of time before Hollywood came calling with big stories and bigger budgets.
Sometimes they worked out well for him (the two Robert Downey Jr.-starring Sherlock Holmes movies) and sometimes they didn't (the less said about King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, the better), but now here he is, less than eight months after giving the world his Will Smith-fuelled version of Aladdin, with what looks like a return to form.
The Gentlemen stars Matthew McConaughey as American expat Mickey Pearson, a man who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. But when word gets out that he's looking to cash out of the business forever, it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
From the trailer, you can see that it does look like Ritchie has returned to the fast-talking, fast-moving world of UK gangsters, but he's brought a hugely impressive supporting cast along for the ride, including Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong and Eddie Marsan.
And seriously, how much fun does it look like Colin Farrell is having here?
The Gentlemen is set for cinema release on 1 January 2020, so the perfect way to ring in the new year!
