Netflix have announced that the long-awaited sequel to animation classic Chicken Run will be dropping on the platform this December.

Posting on its Twitter account, the streaming service revealed that Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, will be available on the service from 15 December, just in time for Christmas viewings.

The follow-up – which will premiere at the 67th London Film Festival on 14 October before coming to Netflix – will be released 23 years after the original, which was beloved by audiences and critics alike.

It was also a huge box office success and to this day, remains the highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time.

The official premise for the sequel from Netflix reads:

“Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky (Zachary Levi) hatch a little girl called Molly (Bella Ramsey), Ginger’s happy ending seems complete.

“But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!”

The film’s voice cast also includes Daniel Mays, David Bradley, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, Lynn Ferguson, Miranda Richardson, Nick Mohammed, Peter Serafinowicz and Romesh Ranganathan.
