Netflix hint at the major events in The Crown’s final episodes

The Crown will end closer to the modern day than we expected.

The first episode of The Crown kicked off in 1947, and over the following seasons, decades within the monarchy have been portrayed on the hit Netflix show.

The fifth and most recent season, which debuted on the streamer in November 2022, ended with the Hong Kong handover in July 1997, and in the time since, fans of the series have been guessing how close to the modern day the upcoming sixth and final episodes might take us.

A new release from Netflix this week reveals that the show will actually end several years after that. Taking to their social media on Monday afternoon, Netflix stated the following, accompanied by the imagery of Charles and Camilla’s wedding program (seen in main image above):

“After six seasons, seven years and three casts, The Crown comes to an end later this year. Here’s a hint at what’s to come in our final season.”

With that wedding taking place in 2005, the show will end much closer to the modern day than we expected, although how much further than that remains to be seen, but the series will also detail the early relationship of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who met in 2001 and began dating in 2003.

As for the final scenes involving Diana Spencer, The Crown’s executive producer Suzanne Mackie told the Edinburgh TV Festival (as reported by BBC News) the following:

“The show might be big and noisy, but we’re not. We’re thoughtful people and we’re sensitive people. There was a very, very careful, long, long, long conversation about how we do it – and I hope, you know, the audience will judge it in the end, but I think it’s been delicately, thoughtfully recreated.”

When talking about Elizabeth Debicki, who portrayed Princess Diana in the fifth season and will remain in the role in the sixth season, Mackie said:

“She was so thoughtful, considerate and loved Diana. So there was a huge amount of respect from us all. I hope that’s evident when you see it.”

The sixth and final season of The Crown is expected to debut on Netflix before the end of 2023.
