This scorching supercut of Daenerys shows how she arrived at that dark decision

Burn them all!

As always, if you haven’t seen the most recent Game of Thrones episode, consider this to be your spoiler alert warning.

“I will take what is mine with fire and blood”

Granted, Daenerys was directing that threat at the rulers of Qarth when they were denying her wishes, however, the signs of The Mad Queen were always there.

This being said, Dany’s descent into a war criminal has been pretty spectacular and rapid.

We’ve already discussed the key points along Daenerys’ dark descent and the pacing/writing issues that exist in Season 8 – Emilia Clarke and the showrunners have also been vocal about the reasoning behind that scene in King’s Landing – and it’s worth remembering that only two episodes ago, Dany was fighting to defend The North against the Night King’s army of the dead.

That’s a pretty seismic switch in such a short space of time but as she gazed upon the Red Keep with murder on her mind, Daenerys was all of the following; scorned lover, paranoid ruler, a heartbroken person that suffered too many losses, somebody that didn’t have any trusted advisors to curb their worst instincts, and a ruler that’s intent on achieving their ultimate goal by any means possible.

As Maester Aemon once said: “a Targaryen alone in the world is a terrible thing” and this supercut of Dany’s journey into madness is proof of this.

Of course, selective editing has omitted the acts of heroism and kindness that Daenerys has performed over the eight seasons – for example, we see very little of her ‘Breaker of Chains’ persona – but it does make for interesting viewing.

As the credits roll on the final episode of Game of Thrones, will the mad queen reign?

We shall wait and see.
