Danny DeVito “always wanted” to make a sequel to Matilda and he has an idea for the plot

Matilda 2

Magic.

Aside from having a devout following from the Roald Dahl book, the film adaptation of Matilda continues to be a firm favourite of movie fans.

Co-produced and directed by Danny DeVito, the beloved family comedy/coming of age fantasy has lost none of its charm over the years and you can see why.

If you haven’t seen it, the film is about a young genius girl named Matilda Wormwood, who develops psychokinetic abilities and uses them to deal with her disreputable family and Agatha Trunchbull, the ruthless, oppressive and tyrannical principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School.

With beloved characters like Miss Honey, Bruce Bogtrotter (you have to respect anyone who can eat a cake that big), and FBI Agents Bill and Bob, DeVito’s film is still treasured by viewers, both young and old.

Well, aside from crashing weddings with The Rock, the star of Twins and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has been promoting his latest film, Jumanji: The Next Level and during an interview with Comic-Book.com, DeVito was asked if there’s any role/film that he’d like to revisit.

“I always wanted to do Matilda 2, but when the kid was still a kid. But that was like 20 years ago, 25 years ago. Maybe Matilda has a kid and we can do something on that, I don’t know,” he said.

Of course, the kid that DeVito is referring to is the star of Matilda, Mara Wilson, who is now 32 years old.

What do you reckon? Would that be a solid enough idea to return to the magical world of Matilda?

Given the fact that the book and the original revolved around the whole concept of ‘wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable,’ we’d imagine that a new adversary would be required, but we’re open to the idea of a sequel.

As for Jumanji: The Next Level, it’s released in Irish cinemas on 11 December.
