The Dark Knight is returning to Irish cinemas this weekend

Paul Moore

Why so serious? You can now relive the classic.

With Black Panther – rightfully or wrongly, it’s all a matter of opinion – becoming the highest rated film in the history of Rotten Tomatoes, the debate about the greatest comic-book film of all time has resurfaced. Not to be too critical of D.C’s recent films, but it’s clear that Marvel are currently setting the standard when it comes to comic-book adaptations.

This being said, things were very different in July 2008 when Christopher Nolan released The Dark Knight to universal acclaim. Almost a decade since being released, Nolan’s follow-up to Batman Begins is still a modern-day classic for a variety of reasons, the biggest being Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as The Joker.

Aside from memorable one-liners – “some men just want to watch the world burn” is still endlessly used – superb set pieces and memorable performances, Nolan was clever enough to frame his comic-book epic as a crime story, essentially, The Dark Knight is Heat that’s set in Gotham City.

Ultimately, it’s Ledger’s superb performance that audiences remember the most and if you haven’t seen it on the big screen, or if you fancy seeing it again, now is the perfect time to do so.

The Omniplex cinemas in Dublin (Rathmines), Wexford, Tralee, Lisburn, Limerick, Dundalk, Belfast (Dundonald), Cork (Mahon Point) and Craigavon are all showing Nolan’s brilliant take on Batman.

Further details about these screenings can be found here and they’re all taking place from Feb 24th-26th.

Let’s put a smile on that face!
