Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee discusses the potential romance between James and Erin

James Erin Derry Girls

Fans of Derry Girls have been itching to know.

Throughout the two seasons of Derry Girls, Erin Quinn’s romantic history has been a bit mixed and that’s putting it kindly. In the very first episode, Erin was desperate to see David Donnelly’s band but detention put an end to those plans.

Truth be told, we’re delighted that she got sent to detention because that whole scene was comedy gold!

Later in the season, Miss Quinn’s misinformed opinion that Katya was a prostitute didn’t exactly impress David at the house party and he quickly soured on her. However, things picked up in Season 2….sort of.

After woefully striking out with her Protestant crush Dee – he thought Erin was having a fit while she was trying to show off her ‘moves’ – she got another shot at romance when John Paul was ditched by his girlfriend.

Truth be told, Erin did have high hopes for a romance between the pair after she got one kiss on the cheek before John Paul passed out in a puddle of his own sick. Romance, eh?

“She has no respect for herself and coming from me, that’s bad” is what Michelle said and it turns out that Erin should have listened to her mate. After strong arming John Paul into taking her to the prom, things took a sad turn when he didn’t show up.

However, in a move that would impress Ross Geller, James was on hand to save the day and be her date to the prom.

That scene managed to make Scarlet’s ‘Independent Love Song’ even better because it’s one of those rare moments when music elevates the whole atmosphere. We defy anyone not to have a mini fist pump moment during that scene.

Anyway, after that episode aired, plenty of people thought that there was a little spark between ‘the wee English fella’ and Saoirse-Monica Jackson’s character.

Before the Season 2 finale aired, JOE had the chance to chat with Lisa McGee (writer/creator of Derry Girls) and she does think that romance could be in the pair.

“I think that I’ve always had a feeling that there might be something between James and Erin. I think though that it might not develop until they’re older, you might never see it. I think a reason why James puts up with so much is because of Erin. You know, that’s just my thinking. I don’t know how much of that we’ll see, or where that will go,” said McGee.
