Irish actor cast as young Dexter in new prequel serial killer series

Stephen Porzio

He will star in the reboot opposite Christian Slater.

Dublin actor Patrick Gibson has been cast in the lead role of Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to the smash hit crime drama series.

Dexter – which first premiered in 2006 – saw Michael C. Hall play Dexter Morgan, with the show chronicling the anti-hero’s journey as a forensic technician who lives a parallel life as a vigilante serial killer.

In regards the latter, the character hunts down murderers who have not been adequately punished by the justice system.

Having ran for eight seasons until 2013 and after getting a reboot season titled Dexter: New Blood in 2021, a prequel series is now in the works in which Gibson – best known for his roles in Shadow and Bone, The OA and What Richard Did – will play a younger incarnation of the anti-hero.

Co-starring Golden Globe winner Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and homicide detective, and Molly Brown (Senior Year) as Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan, Dexter: Original Sin will take place 15 years before the start of the original show.

Over its 10 episodes, it will “chronicle America’s favourite serial killer…in training.”

“Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” the plot synopsis reads.

“When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar.

“This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”

Dexter: Original Sin will stream on Paramount+ in Ireland.

Dexter’s eight original seasons, meanwhile, are available to watch on Netflix right now for those wanting to catch up following the casting news.
