'[Graham's] mesmerising every time he’s on screen.'

Apple TV has just released Nocturne, its new "must-see" thriller series starring Stephen Graham (Boiling Point, The Good Boy).

The story follows Jonah Lynn (Liev Schreiber, Caught Stealing), an ex-soldier turned homicide detective. Tired of Philadelphia's tough streets, he moves to a small town in western Pennsylvania, seeking a quieter life.

"As the town and his family soon come under attack from the diabolically cunning serial killer Jurek Walter (Graham), Jonah must protect all that he holds dear," the plot synopsis adds.

"When the desperate search for Jurek’s last missing victim forces Jonah to send his surrogate daughter, FBI Agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz, They Will Kill You), up against Jurek, how far will Jonah go?"

Comprising ten episodes, Nocturne is based on Lars Kepler's internationally bestselling crime novels Lazarus and The Sandman. The show's cast also includes Bill Camp, Chrissy Metz, Gary Carr, Poorna Jagannathan, and Rory Culkin.

BAFTA Award winner Rowan Joffé (28 Weeks Later, Ballad of a Small Player) created the series, which was developed for TV and written by John Hlavin (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Shooter). Emmy Award winner Tim Van Patten (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) also directs the first two episodes.

Having just dropped on Apple TV today (Friday, 30 October), Nocturne is already earning very positive reviews. The show currently holds a high 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In particular, Graham's "standout" villainous turn, the series' sense of atmosphere, and its slow-burn storytelling have been singled out for praise. That said, some critics have dubbed the thriller's plot "familiar" and "predictable".
