Disney has just made its first ever adults-only superhero project

Fair warning, the trailer for the new Disney project is fairly intense…

Over the years, there have been plenty of superhero shows and movies that were aimed exclusively at adults: The Boys, Joker, Invincible, Watchmen, Peacemaker. Some of these have even already been Marvel projects: Deadpool, Logan, Blade, the Netflix version of the Daredevil show.

But no project under the shared banner of both Disney and Marvel has ever been aimed exclusively at adults before, which is just one of the reasons why Echo has immediately received fans’ attention, off the back of its brand new trailer.

While the show hasn’t been given a certification on this side of the Atlantic yet, in America it has been revealed that Echo will receive the TV-MA rating, which means it has been created specifically for Mature Audiences.

For a show to receive this rating in the States, which is the strictest rating a show can get in the States (for example, nearly all HBO shows receive this rating), then it is because it “contains one or more of the following: graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, or crude indecent language.”

From the trailer, we can already see that Echo is pushing the boundaries on violence for a Disney superhero project…

Echo will see the return of some Marvel favourites

Director and executive producer Sydney Freeland told Variety about the increased intensity: “It is kind of a new direction for the brand, especially on Disney+. We wanted very, very adamantly to show that these are people on our show – they bleed, they die, they get killed and there are real consequences.”

Picking up from the plot of Hawkeye’s solo show, the official synopsis for the new series is as follows: “Echo spotlights Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.”

The trailer also teases the return of Daredevil (Charlie Cox), ahead of the return of his own show, Daredevil: Born Again, currently set to debut on Disney+ some time later in 2024.

All five episodes will be available to stream on Disney+ from 10 January 2024, and you can check out the rest of this week’s brand new trailers right here.
