Rory Cashin

And so begins the first binge-watching season of 2022…

Next year will see Disney release A LOT of new content both in cinemas and on its streaming platform, but for January 2022, Disney+ has given us a peek at its schedule.

And so, we’ve picked out the 10 best new and classic shows and movies to enjoy during the first month of the new year…

Bob’s Burgers Season 11 – 5 January

In the grand scheme of great animated shows – from The Simpsons to South Park, from Archer to Big Mouth – one of the consistently excellent series revolves around Bob, his burger restaurant, and his eclectic group of family and friends.

Ahead of the release of Bob’s Burgers: The Movie in May 2022, you can get all caught up on the various escapades with this latest season.

The Big Short – 7 January

Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong, Finn Wittrock and Marisa Tomei star in this hilarious but very tense retelling of the 2007 financial crisis that the world is still recovering from today.

Eternals – 12 January

It feels like it has only just arrived in Irish cinemas, but the MCU’s millennium-spanning, universe-jumping behemoth of a movie is soon arriving on the streaming service’s library.

Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden are among the heroes trying to save the Earth from total annihilation.

The Real Queens of Hip Hop: The Women Who Changed the Game – 14 January

This documentary takes a look at the famous female hip-hop artists of today and how they were influenced and assisted by the genre queens of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s.

Narrated by Salt of Salt-n-Pepa fame, the doc will feature conversations with the iconic likes of Da Brat, Eve, Trina, Lil’ Mama, Angie Martinez and many more.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – 14 January

In the grand history of asking the question “Why did this movie never get a sequel?”, Master and Commander is always one of the most popular answers.

An old-school action-adventure with Russell Crowe starring as a ship captain during the Napoleonic Wars as he is sent out to sea on a particularly dangerous mission.

Queens – 19 January

Four women in their 40s (including famous performers Brandy and Eve) reunite to reform their 90s girl group Nasty Bitches, in an attempt to recapture some of that magic (and re-earn some of that money!) from their prime.

Shockingly, the show has a score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, so we’re even more on board that we originally thought we were.

Fantastic Mr. Fox – 21 January

Director Wes Anderson has a particular talent for gathering some of the best casts in the world for his movies – just look at The French Dispatch or Isle of Dogs.

For this stop-motion animated adaptation of the much-loved Roald Dahl story, he got George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe and Owen Wilson.

Very impressive.

Marvel’s Hit-Monkey – 26 January

A Japanese monkey is an assassin who has been framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and is mentored the ghost of an American assassin (voiced by Jason Sudekis) as he attempts to get revenge on the criminal underbelly in Tokyo.

If that synopsis doesn’t interest you, then we can’t be friends.

Date Night – 28 January

Tina Fey and Steve Carrell are a happily-ish married couple who try to spruce up the excitement in the relationship during their date night, only for it to backfire hugely as they accidentally get involved with the mafia.

Mark Wahlberg, Ray Liotta, Common, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig and Taraji P. Henson fill out the impressive cast list.

Underwater – 28 January

A bit of a hidden gem as long as you can forgive the fact that it is basically Alien… but underwater.

Kristen Stewart survives a major incident on the oil rig she works on at the very bottom of the ocean, only to discover that the incident may not have been accidental…
