Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 5 September) is Django Unchained, the 2012 Western masterpiece written and directed by Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction).
Set two years before the US Civil War, the film stars Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx (Ray) as a slave named Django who finds himself accompanying an unorthodox German bounty hunter named Dr. King Schultz (Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds). This is on a mission to capture the vicious Brittle brothers.
Having completed this task successfully, Schultz frees Django, and the pair begin hunting the South's most-wanted criminals together.
"Their travels take them to the infamous plantation of shady Calvin Candie (Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant), where Django's long-lost wife (Kerry Washington, Scandal) is still a slave," the plot synopsis reads.
Very loosely inspired by Django, the 1966 classic spaghetti Western, Django Unchained's ensemble cast also includes Don Johnson, Franco Nero, Jonah Hill, Samuel L. Jackson and Walton Goggins.
It is no surprise the movie was adored by audiences, thanks to its stylish direction, incredible dialogue, great soundtrack and shocking moments of violence - all hallmarks of Tarantino's work.
Holding an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score, the film even won two Oscars: Best Supporting Actor for Waltz and Best Original Screenplay for Tarantino.
