Netflix star confirmed to replace Rooney Mara in upcoming Dragon Tattoo sequel

Back in 2011, David Fincher released his version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to great reviews (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) and decent box office returns ($232 million worldwide). The perfectly cast Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as the central duo investigating a decades old murder fit really well into Fincher's bleak vision, and Sony Pictures had reportedly already lined up Fincher to direct the two sequels - The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's nest - back to bad. However, rumours persisted at Sony had baulked at Fincher's proposed budget - his version of Dragon Tattoo apparently cost in excess of $150 million to make - and while the studio threw different script-writers at the problem, eventually the decision to reboot entirely was made. So with the director and original cast all gone, in stepped Fede Alvarez, director of hugely successful thriller Don't Breath, to adapt The Girl In The Spider's Web, and in the role of hyper-intelligent hacker Lisbeth Salander, he has cast Claire Foy of Netflix's The Crown. There is still no word of who will play Mikael Blomkvist, previously portrayed by Craig, but the plot will involve Lisbeth and Mikael as they investigate a group of cyber criminals who have some serious ties to pretty much every major government around the world. Alvarez made this statement about Foy's casting (via Deadline): "I couldn’t be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander. Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth. I can’t wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its centre." The Girl In The Spider's Web is set to open on 19 October 2018, which will put it head-to-head with the new Halloween movie, which Jamie Lee Curtis confirmed this week she would be starring in.
