Disney+ has just added Echo, its first big action series of 2024, to its library.

A standalone spin-off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) show Hawkeye, the show centres around Maya Lopez aka Echo (Alaqua Cox), a deaf woman who is a member of the Native American Choctaw Nation and was the former leader of the Tracksuit Mafia.

The latter are a criminal gang working for the villainous Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio).

Disney+ says that Echo will spotlight Lopez as she is pursued by Fisk’s criminal empire, adding: “When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy.”

Echo is the first of the streaming service’s MCU series to be released under the Marvel Spotlight banner, meaning viewers do not need to have seen other Marvel shows to be able to follow its story.

It is also the first of the Disney+ MCU series to be aimed solely at adults, with the project receiving a TV-MA rating in the US – meaning it is specifically for mature audiences.

And if you watch the action-packed violent trailer for Echo below, you will see how it earned the rating.

Based on the reviews for the show, this change in direction for the franchise has been received very positively.

Currently sitting on a 73% Rotten Tomatoes score, here is a sample of some of the praise from critics for Echo.

AV Club: “It’s impressive just how good Cox is here. She carries the show completely with her body language, facial expressions, and signing.”

Hollywood Reporter: “While I can’t say whether Echo gets the nuances of being a butt-kicking vigilante, the effort it puts into making the character’s deafness, Indigenous heritage and prosthetic limb integral is impressive and entertaining at once.”

Inverse: “The series brings the franchise into a new future by calling back to a brutal, neck-snapping era of TV that makes Echo feel like it’s lifted straight from the early 2000s.”

Rolling Stone: “One of the stronger MCU shows overall when it comes to accomplishing what it sets out to do.”

Echo also features amongst its cast Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil, as well as Andrew Howard (Limitless), Chaske Spencer (The English), Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves), Tantoo Cardinal (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Zahn McClarnon (Fargo).

Comprising of five episodes, all of the series is available to stream on Disney+ right now.
