Even Ed Sheeran wanted his Game of Thrones character to be brutally murdered

Paul Moore

Game of Thrones

Quick, someone call The Hound.

Eyes being gouged out of their sockets. Innocent children being burned at the stake. Rabid dogs tearing the flesh from every bone.

And yet, Ed Sheeran’s character in Game of Thrones wasn’t sliced and diced by Arya Stark.

The gods – both old and new – are cruel bastards.

Ok, to begin with, we’re going to make a few things clear. We’ve nothing personal against Ed Sheeran because as he has frequently shown, he has a heart of gold. This being said, we still desperately wanted his head to be chopped off.

In fact, we even wrote a whole article which showed how he might meet his grisly end.

Sadly, the fact that Ed isn’t dead left us more numb than a lock-in at The Red Wedding but it turns out that the singer wasn’t even a fan of his own performance on the show.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Sheeran was very candid about his role as a Lannister soldier that meets Arya on her travels.

“I know what Game of Thrones fans hoped happened to my character. I’m sure they think my character got brutally, brutally murdered, but I think my character is still out there. I think he’s chillin’. It was fun being in Game of Thrones, but I definitely think they should’ve killed me off in the episode. I reckon that probably would’ve been the redemption for people that didn’t like it.”

At the time of the episode, director Jeremy Podeswa said that: “Ed did a lovely job – he’s a lovely actor and a lovely person. He was appropriate for the part because he needed to sing. If people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought about it twice.”

This being said, Kristian Nairn (Hodor) has since expressed his disdain for Sheeran’s cameo in the beloved show.

“I’m not a fan of the cameos in ‘Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world. Especially Ed Sheeran. I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones?,” he said.

As always, Hodor is right.

We know that Season 8 is arriving next year but if the producers want to film some additional scenes, we’re all in favour of The Hound decapitating Sheeran’s soldier on the battlefield.

Dear Ed, what’s the shape of you? Headless, please say headless.
