A fantastic insight into a very likeable and talented man. Well worth watching.
It’s fitting that on one of the proudest moments of Shane Lowry’s year, he was thinking about someone else.
Cast your mind back to the moment when the Clara man was voted the RTÉ Sport Sportsperson of the Year. After winning his first major title in commanding fashion in the 148th Open at Royal Portrush, there’s no doubting that Lowry was a deserving winner of the accolade.
However, as he accepted his award, Lowry used his speech to pay tribute to his deceased Clara clubmate John Buckley.
“I am just a normal country lad from Clara and speaking of Clara, we are about to bury a very good GAA man tomorrow. I was down at the funeral today and I will be there tomorrow. I would like to dedicate this to John Buckley and his family. Family and my hometown, my county and my country mean a lot to me,” he said
That’s just one of the many reasons why the Irish public have so much affection for the Offaly man.
Well, in his most recent documentary, the award-winning filmmaker Ross Whitaker (Katie, Anthony Foley – Munsterman) really did capture the appeal of why Lowry’s success is one that’s universally shared an embraced by the whole country.
In terms of its official synopsis, Shane Lowry: Open tells the remarkable tale behind the Offaly man’s British Open win this summer. However, the fly on the wall style really does capture Lowry’s personality while providing viewers with an insight into his kind and supportive family.
In case you missed it last night, the documentary is now available to watch on the RTÉ Player and it made a very strong impression on those who saw it.
RTE trailer for SHANE LOWRY: OPEN. It was a fun, if unnervingly quick documentary to make. Great character, great story. It's on tomorrow (Monday) night at 9:30pm on @RTEOne. pic.twitter.com/0inUg0ZmP0

Watching the Shane Lowry documentary on RTÉ, don’t think I’ve ever seen a top sportsman who comes across as such a likeable, genuine person. Someone you just love to see doing well

Shane Lowry is so likeable. I love watching him play and hearing him speak. A very modest yet brilliant guy. His dad Brendan seems like an absolute panic too. What a lovely family. I’m delighted for all of them he has that Open and career. #shanelowryopen
