The show’s creator has given fans some hope.

Believe it or not, the first episode of Family Guy aired over two decades ago, premiering on 31 January, 1999.

Much like, well, every other show that has been on the air for that long, it reached a peak, and now mostly exists as a time-filler, and the response to “You’ll never believe what is STILL on the TV!”

Also, since then, we’ve had the South Park movie and The Simpsons movie, as well as (deep breath) the Hey Arnold! movie, the Spongebob Squarepants movie, the Powerpuff Girls movie, Bratz, The Smurfs, Postman Pat, My Little Pony, Teen Titans Go!, Alvin and the Chipmunks… we could go on, but we won’t.

Oh, one more. Bobs Burgers: The Movie is arriving in July 2020.

Pretty much every major hit animation series has been on the big screen in the last two decades, so why haven’t we had a Family Guy movie?

For those concerned that it might never happen, then you’ll be happy to know that the show’s creator Seth MacFarlane has previously talked about how it would be a mix of animation and live-action (which sounds… weird, like that Hallowe’en episode of The Simpsons where 3D Homer falls into the real world), but during a recent appearance on the Today show, MacFarlane had the following to say about the project:

“I’ve been talking about this for 10 years. The Family Guy movie is still on my to-do list… I have a pretty clear sense of what it’s going to be. I have for some time, but I just haven’t gotten around to it.”

So. It is still on the agenda.

But fingers crossed that means we’ll eventually also get an American Dad movie, because unlike Family Guy, that show is still really funny. Almost entirely down to Roger The Alien.

So maybe just give him his own movie? We’d be fine with that.
