Because there is a big difference between Best and Favourite.
Listen, we can sit here and argue all day about how Citizen Kane or Vertigo or whichever movie is the greatest movie ever made, but when it comes down to it, on a Saturday evening in, who turns to their friends / partner / pet and says “You know what I really wanna watch right now? Citizen Kane.”
Nobody. Nobody has ever said that.
No, instead of best, we turn to our favourites, so we’re not asking which movie from 2019 you thought was the best, but the ones your enjoyed the most.
Most enjoyable usually goes hand-in-hand with most popular, and according to Box Office Mojo, these were the ten biggest box office hits of 2019:
Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Frozen II, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Joker, Aladdin, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Ne Zha.
(No, we hadn’t heard of that last one either. We looked it up, and it is an animated movie from China, where it made 99% of its $700m worldwide haul.)
