Great news for film fans.

With the summer season upon us, you know exactly what that means…

Rain. Lots and lots of rain.

However, who needs sunshine when you’ve got the best films right on your doorstep?

Outside bad, cinema good.

That’s a universal fact, but things are about to get so much better for film fans in Galway because a new luxury cinema is going to be built at Baily Point in Salthill.

Omniplex Cinemas, Ireland’s largest multiplex chain, will begin the development of the new and luxurious cinema, which is set to cost €5 million.

To sweeten this already sweeeeeeet deal, Omniplex’s 29th cinema on these shores will be Ireland’s first ten-screen reclining cinema.

The cinema will be created as part of  a 30,000 sq. ft development and a phased opening is scheduled this summer; the venue will pay homage to the Hollywood era with a luxury 1920s design and feel.

However, there are going to be plenty of modern comforts such as (deep breath): Premium Barco laser projection, fully electric reclining seats in all screens, 4K and Dolby Atmos auditoriums, and the most immersive sound and viewing experience.

When completed, the 10-screen cinema will accommodate 850 film fans who can enjoy an upgraded cinema experience which includes restaurant food delivered right to their seat and a fully stocked bar (like this hidden one in Dublin.)

In the immortal words of Shaun of the Dead: “How’s that for a slice of fried gold?”

Aside from this, the new cinema will also provide 20 new jobs in the area.

Speaking about the launch, Mark Anderson, Managing Director of Omniplex Cinemas, said: “We’re delighted to announce that we will be bringing our new luxury recline cinema experience to Salthill in Galway this summer. Our new design combined with the latest in cinema technology including laser projection and Dolby Atmos immersive sound, and the extreme comfort of our leather reclining seats will really create a unique cinema experience.”

The cinema chain will be holding a recruitment day on Friday, 21 June in the Salthill Hotel Galway from 10am-4pm.

At present, the new cinema is scheduled to open late this year.

We’ve already ordered our popcorn and food… and drinks… and reclined our chair.
