Man Finds Tape, a cool new mockumentary horror thriller from producers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Daredevil, The Endless, Spring), has just been released on streaming.
Accessible through the service NOW, the movie follows a brother and sister (Kelsey Pribilski and William Magnuson) who stumble upon a series of strange and unexplainable video clips.
Teaming up to make a documentary investigating the events captured in the footage, the pair slowly discover "a shocking secret that’s overtaking their small-town Texas community".
The debut feature from writing-directing duo Paul Gandersmann and Peter S. Hall, Man Finds Tape is one of those low-budget, hidden gem genre movies that punches above its weight, thanks to a gripping story and clever execution.
While the film suffers slightly from coming out so soon after similar faux-documentary horrors like Shelby Oaks and Strange Harvest, the premise of a man discovering a creepy, inexplicable and mysterious recording of him as a child, and then investigating its origin, is very compelling.
As he and his documentarian sister dig deeper, they realise that many locals in their area have been experiencing their own bizarre phenomena, footage of which we then see (presented as though gathered from real-life CCTV, dashcams, live streams and other personal recordings).
This all comes together to create an eerie portrait of a town quietly being taken over by an invisible threat or one that is hiding in plain sight.
Even if Man Finds Tape's answers and resolutions ultimately feel slightly underwhelming after all that came before, horror and thriller fans should get something out of the movie's haunting imagery, its inventive presentation, and its slow-burn, strange, twisty creepypasta-esque tale.
