Game of Thrones star really didn’t like Ed Sheeran’s cameo in the show

Sheeran thrones cameo

Hard for any Game of Thrones fan to argue with this.

Game of Thrones will always be centred around a difference of opinion -hell, the right to the Iron Throne isn’t going to be settled with a nice friendly chat – but when it comes to Ed Sheeran’s highly publicised cameo in the show, most fans of the show tend to agree.

Truthfully, we’ve never had any issue with the singer actually appearing in the show. The issue was with the fact that that particular moment during the first episode of Season 7 – the one where Arya meets the Lannister guards as she’s heading to King’s Landing – just ‘took you out’ of the show.

In that moment, you were very aware that you were watching Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones. It just felt weird.

Compare this to the seamless and practically anonymous cameos that the likes of Mastodon, Gary Lightbody, Of Monsters and Men, and Sigur Rós have made. Those appearances didn’t jar you out of the story in the same way that Sheeran’s did.

The director of that particular episode defended it, but we still can’t forget his delivery of the line ‘it’s a new one’ from our head.

Well, on that note, it appears that Kristian Nairn (Hodor) also wasn’t a fan of the Shape of You singer appearing in Westeros.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, he said:  “I’m not a fan of the cameos in ‘Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world.”

He added: “Especially Ed Sheeran. I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones?”

It appears that Nairn had the exact same response as every single Game of Thrones fans to that scene.

“It’s a fantasy show. We’re all caught in this amazing world and spend so much time and money and talent to create, and all of a sudden there’s a pop star? What?”

He may be gone – or is he? – but Hodor continues to remain one of our favouirte characters, especially after those quotes.

As for Game of Thrones fans, they can take solace in the fact that Sheeran’s character is probably dead.
