Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 8 November) is Gangs of New York, the period gangster epic from director Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Departed).
Based on the 1927 non-fiction book The Gangs of New York by Herbert Asbury, the 2002 film boasts a large ensemble cast including Oscar-winners Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, as well as Brendan Gleeson, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Marsan, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Liam Neeson and Stephen Graham.
Its story follows an orphaned Irish-American named Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) in the 19th century. He returns to the Five Points area of New York City seeking revenge against William 'Bill the Butcher' Cutting (Day-Lewis), the killer of his father (Neeson) and a powerful anti-immigrant gang leader.
"Vallon knows that revenge can only be attained by infiltrating Cutting's inner circle," the plot synopsis adds.
"Amsterdam's journey becomes a fight for personal survival and to find a place for the Irish people in 1860s New York."
A long-time passion project for Scorsese, Gangs of New York was a turbulent production, as shooting went overlong and over-budget.
On top of this, there has been plenty of reporting about producer Harvey Weinstein demanding cuts to the movie and about there possibly being a longer, unreleased version of the film that better captures its director's vision.
That said, upon release, Gangs of New York was a box office hit and was adored by critics, with its period detail, its story scope and Day-Lewis' villainous turn being singled out for praise.
The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars, including in the Best Picture category.
In 2022, it was reported that a Gangs of New York TV series was in development, which was still confirmed to be in the works earlier this year.
The original Gangs of New York is airing on Film4 tonight at 11.05pm. It is also available to stream on Netflix now, while people can watch it as well on Channel 4's website from Sunday, 9 November.
