The show comes from the creator of American Horror Story and Netflix’s Monster anthology.
Grotesquerie, a new horror thriller mystery series from prolific TV creator Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Monster, The Watcher), is streaming on Disney+ now.
The series revolves around a hard-bitten alcoholic detective named Lois Tyson (Niecy Nash, Dahmer – Monster) who is investigating a string of extremely shocking murders inspired by passages in the Bible.
Struggling to comprehend these almost “unhuman” killings, Tyson is approached by Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond, Tick Tick Boom), a quirky local young nun who covers true crime for a Catholic news service.
Providing useful insights into the religious symbolism involved in the killings, the detective recruits Sister Megan to help in catching the culprit.
Co-starring Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story), Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) and an as-of-yet unseen after two episodes Travis Kelce – Grotesquerie evokes memories of the classic movie Se7en and the beloved shows Hannibal and True Detective.
This is thanks to its strikingly haunting imagery and its plot detailing the hunt for an elusive, theatrical serial killer.
As well as this, its terrific performances from Diamond, Manville, Nash and Vance and its exploration of contemporary themes – people’s obsession with true crime, people’s changing relationships with religion, the feeling of impending societal collapse – make it grim but very gripping viewing.
