HBO’s excellent Andre The Giant documentary is on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

This is essential viewing.

We’ve made some noise about HBO’s Andre The Giant documentary in recent months, and for good reason.

In the works for a great many years, the film finally saw the light of day on the American network back in April, receiving rave reviews from critics and those from the wrestling world.

Even people not into pro-wrestling found themselves moved by the life story of one of the most truly incredible figures the world has ever known.

Andre The Giant’s story is one of tremendous triumph and terrible struggle, a difficult contrast that the documentary manages to capture.

If you’ve missed out so far, now’s your chance to take it all in, with Sky Atlantic set to show the film tonight – Sunday 10 June – at 10.10pm.

The film features contributions from pivotal figures in Andre’s life, from the likes of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Vince McMahon to family members and close friends to those he shared the silver screen with in The Princess Bride.

Like the man himself, Andre The Giant is an honest, unflinching portrayal of a human being who brought joy to millions while suffering ferocious problems in life.

The film currently has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an excellent recent episode of the Second Captains podcast is well worth seeking out after you’ve watched the documentary, too.
