Zoe Hodges

Tonight’s entertainment is sorted…

A film which was once voted as the best film of all time is on TV tonight – The Shawshank Redemption. In a poll on X back in 2021, the top four rated films on IMDb were pitted against each other.

These were The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and The Dark Knight and over 13,000 users flocked to cast their vote as to which was the best.

The prison drama starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, The Shawshank Redemption, was the clear winner, taking home 47.4% of the vote.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was second with 33.9% of votes and continues to prove that it has a good case for being the best film of the 21st century.

The Godfather and its sequel brought up the rear with 11.2% and 7.4% of the vote respectively.

The 1994 classic has held the top spot on IMDb since 2008, the film boasts a phenomenal 9.3 out of 10 rating on IMDB based on three million reviews.

The story is based on Stephen King’s novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, published in 1982.

However, the film never won an Oscar despite receiving seven nominations – the most nominations for a Stephen King adaptation at the time.

The Shawshank Redemption lost out to Forrest Gump in the Best Picture category and Pulp Fiction also picked up a couple ahead of the film directed by Frank Darabont.

The plot revolves around a banker who is wrongfully sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover.

He maintains his innocence but is forced to live a life behind bars.

Over the next twenty years, he becomes embroiled in a money laundering operation within the prison, orchestrated by one of the wardens.

The film will air on BBC Three tonight at 9 pm.
