The hilarious Derry Girls scene with Clare hanging on the cliff was more terrifying than you thought

Paul Moore

Derry Girls Season 2

“He’s a Fenian-hating mad man!”

In Nicola Coughlan’s own words, the beloved Clare Devlin will always be a ‘shite the tights’ and in the Season 2 opener of Derry Girls, we were absolutely delighted to see that absolutely nothing has changed with the gang.

Ok, one thing changed. Derry Girls has somehow managed to get even funnier than before.

For example, in the Season 2 opener, we learned that Protestants keep toasters in cupboards and that they also hate Abba. Elsewhere, Catholics love to go to Bundoran and watch RTÉ.

Genius.

After Michelle’s endless pursuit to get the shift and Ma Mary’s constant worrying over the bowl, the end of the episode culminated in a wonderful scene where Clare thinks that the Protestant fella that she has been paired up with is trying to kill her.

Ultimately, it’s just one big misunderstanding because the poor fella is deaf in one ear. After seeing events unfold, we’ll never mix up athletes with catholics!

Ahead of the Season 2 opener, JOE had the chance to chat with Nicola Coughlan (Clare) and the talented actress was more than willing to be terrified in the name of comedy.

“I was definitely not looking forward to doing the cliff scene! I’m terrified of heights, she said.

“There was very little acting that day because I was terrified. I did an abseiling lesson the day before and that was on a 20-foot cliff. The one we actually filmed on was 60-foot. It looked a lot smaller on screen which is really annoying. It was pretty damn high. The thing is, you see it on screen for a few minutes but I was up there for hours. The camera had to be on a crane and it was bit of a complicated shoot”.

We think that every Derry Girls fan will appreciate Nicola Coughlan’s work in that scene!
