Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 17 September) is Io Capitano, the Oscar-nominated Italian thriller drama.
Released in 2023, the film follows two poor teenagers, Seydou and Moussa (Seydou Sarr and Moustapha Fall), living in Dakar, Senegal. Together, they yearn for a brighter future in Europe.
As such, they embark on a "treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean, where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage."
Directed by Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Dogman, Tale of Tales), Io Capitano (which means 'Me Captain' in Italian, referencing Seydou's lack of fluency in the language) was inspired by actual stories of migrants' journeys from Africa to Europe.
The movie is an eye-opening white-knuckler. It places the viewer in the shoes of ordinary people whose efforts to better their lives quickly become a brutal fight for survival.
There have been many films made about what it's like to be an undocumented immigrant. Few, though, have focused on the dangerous journeys themselves, particularly with such authenticity and care.
Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, Io Capitano is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.25pm.
The thriller drama is also available to rent on Apple TV, Rakuten TV, and the Sky Store.
