90 minutes of pure joy.
Released in cinemas in February this year, Jackass Forever was a big financial success ($80 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, back at the tail-end of the worst of the pandemic, when cinemas were still an unappealing option), and it scored a surprising-but-not-undeserving 86% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics.
However, we’re not talking about that movie today. No, today we’re talking about Jackass 4.5.
Each of the previous Jackass movies have had “director’s cut” versions, which were essentially the main movie with added footage of stunts and pranks that didn’t make it into the main cinematic release.
Jackass 4.5 feels quite different, as while it does reveal some fantastic set-pieces that will have you absolutely cracking up laughing (the fake-out parachute jump) and/or testing your own gag reflex (the sushi buffet), but it also gives an incredible behind-the-scenes look at how this long-delayed sequel came together, and the intense love that everyone involved still have for each other.
It also gives a great look at making a movie like this against the outbreak of Covid, which worked out in its favour in some way, as it was the only major production happening in Hollywood at the time, so they got to film some of it on the infamous Paramount backlot, as well as bringing in some of the best special effects and make-up artists in the world… because they had literally nothing else to work on at the time.
If you want to watch Jackass Forever, it is currently available to rent for €3.99 on Google Play, Rakuten TV, Apple TV and Sky Store.
Jackass 4.5 is available to watch on Netflix right now. There isn’t an official trailer for that expanded movie, so here’s our interview with Johnny Knoxville and Chris Pontius for the cinematic release of Jackass Forever instead.
