JJ Abrams: I can’t believe they let us shoot Star Wars on Skellig Michael

The Force Awakens director has been speaking about the Irish landmark.

JJ Abrams says he can’t believe he was allowed to film Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens on Skellig Michael off the coast of County Kerry.

The UNESCO site plays a pivotal part in the blockbuster – on the way to becoming the highest grossing film of all time – and, even though the filmmakers are unlikely to return for Episode VIII, Abrams was blown away by it.

“I can’t believe they let us shoot there. I mean, it was so beautiful,” he said in a behind-the-scenes documentary around the making of the film.

Martin Joy, the Supervising Location Manager of the film added: “We were just blown away by it. It’s an extraordinary place. It certainly fed into our Star Wars universe.”
