JOE’s Top Five Action Film Series…

Bond, Bourne and Die Hard oh my...

Eoghan Doherty

This week JOE has brought you some of our favourite ever Action Movie heroes and our favourite ever Action Movie villains of all time, and now it’s time to reveal our definitive list of our favourite ever Action Movie series.

Many of our aforementioned heroes and villains are the stars of the five excellent series below and these films are the reason that those guys are the biggest and bombastic best.

It’s all to celebrate the return of the Jameson Cult Film Club as they put on their biggest and most action-packed double screening to date. Continuing on from this year’s successful screenings of Intermission and LA Confidential, the Jameson Cult Film Club promises to transport the audience right into the world of the high suspense action classic, Die Hard (1988), which will be screened at a secret Dublin location on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th September 2013.

The Die Hard Series

When it comes to Action Movie explosion-y goodness it really doesn’t get any better than the Die Hard series. That’s to be expected when you’re blessed with the perfect action hero in Bruce Willis’ balding John McClane and some of the finest villains ever committed to celluloid – Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), his demented brother Simon Peter (Jeremy Irons) and the scariest of them all, Jai Courtney’s acting ability in A Good Day (To Stop Making) Die Hard – a truly terrfiyingly terrible thespian.

Bad acting and no plot in that final Die Hard film aside, the original 1988 classic is still the greatest action, and Christmas, film of all time:

The Bourne Series

Like the Die Hard films above, we’re essentially ignoring the most recent addition to the series , The Bourne Legacy. Did you hear that Jeremy Renner? It doesn’t count when you have to take magic pills to make you mazin’ like the real Jason Bourne.

The proper action fun in this series is in the first three installments – Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum – undoubtedly one of the greatest film trilogies ever made.

Starring MAAATT DAAAAAMON as the titular Bourne, this amnesiac-suffering super soldier won’t remember where he left the car keys but he will remember how to leave you in a crumpled, whimpering heap.

(By the way Jason, the car keys are down the back of the sofa. Please don’t hurt us…)

The Bond Series

One of the most iconic action heroes of all time, James Bond, stars in one of the most iconic film series of all time. The James Bond films, obviously.

Over its 50 year history, we’ve seen some absolute classics – Goldfinger, Skyfall – some not so absolute classics – Octopussy, The World is Not Enough – and one absolute clanger – Roger Moore.

With a perfectly suave and sexy spy, numerous memorable villains and more beautiful Bond babes than you could shake a non-stirred Martini at, the Bond series has got it all to take you to Double Oh Heaven:

The Rambo Series

Rambo himself didn’t actually feature on our list of Action Movie heroes, mainly because Chuck Norris was there instead of him and to be fair to us, there was just no way JOE was going to break the news to Mr Norris that he wouldn’t be getting a slot. Sorry Rambo.

The Rambo films, however, and First Blood in particular, is one of the finest Action movies of all time and so fully deserves its place on the list, mainly because it’s full of Sly ‘shootin’ big guns’ Stallone and great gory goodness:

The Terminator Series

As the Artificial Intelligent machine network Skynet waged war on John Connor and his resistance forces, we, the audience, got to sit back and enjoy the Austrian Oak Arnie Schwarzenegger as a bad guy, as a good guy, as an old guy and as a CGI cameo guy.

Director and T-800 creator James Cameron set the action film bar high with The Terminator in 1984 and then completely blew up the bar in a leather pants-wearing explosion with Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991).

So if you want to be there to see the film that remains the best of a brilliant bunch, then just register for tickets for the Jameson Cult Film Club Die Hard screening here so you can spend your action-packed evening with other amazing like-minded die hard Die Hard fans.
