Painting the box office neon green…

Whether you like, love, hate, or find Joker to be a wee bit questionable, there is one fact that cannot be denied; Joaquin Phoenix and his take on the Clown Prince of Crime has captured the general public’s imagination to a huge degree.

How huge, you ask? Well, how does $544 million sound?

Having enjoyed a record-breaking opening weekend, the Todd Phillips-directed picture has, as of Sunday, passed the half-billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office.

Considering the movie is only out 10 days, that’s a pretty ridiculous return.

Throw in reports that the film is the most-attended of the entire year already in some Irish cinemas and plenty of social media notices about it being sold out hours in advance, and you do wonder just how much green this thing is going to rake in.

And then there’s the whole Oscar buzz – which appears quite legitimate – to factor in.

Box Office Mojo notes that Joker has taken in $192.7 million domestically in America, staying top of the charts in its second week, holding off high profile new releases like the animated reboot of The Addams Family and Will Smith’s Gemini Man to the tune of $55 million.

Across the rest of the globe, Joker has performed to the value of approximately $351.3 million.

As a result, it marks the ninth highest-grossing DC Comics adaptation in history, and you wouldn’t bet against it climbing that ladder in the coming weeks.
