Kevin Hart was meant to host the Oscars this year, but he stepped down following the surfacing of homophobic tweets.

Kevin Hart appeared on Ellen on Friday to discuss the recent controversy which resulted in him stepping down as the host of this year’s Oscars.

The interview surprised a number of people, as Ellen said that she had called the Academy and asked them to reinstate Hart as the host.

Ellen described the comedian as “one of the smartest and funniest” people she knew, and felt that he was more than capable of hosting the awards, despite his controversial tweets.

Critics of the interview felt it would have been an ideal opportunity for Ellen to question Hart about his tweets, and felt that she shied away from what could have been a proper conversation about homophobia.

CNN’s Don Lemon has criticised the interview, claiming that Hart “somehow turns himself into a victim instead of acknowledging the real victims of violent and sometimes deadly homophobia.”

Hart went as far as to describe the incident that saw people find his homophobic tweets as “an attack” on him and his character.

The tweets in question were posted in 2008, and he has since apologised for any offence caused.
