An Oscar-winning sports drama is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

King Richard

Despite receiving rapturous reviews upon release, the movie wound up becoming overshadowed by a major controversy.

Prime Video has just quietly added 12 big movies to its library, but if none of these are for you, here are the films airing on TV tonight starting with:

The Godfather – Film4 – 9pm

The favourite movie of the Kens in Barbie.

Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

A standalone sequel to the incredible South Korean zombie flick Train to Busan.

Acts of Vengeance – Legend – 9pm

Antonio Banderas stars in this 2017 revenge action thriller.

The Butterfly Room – Horror Xtra – 9pm

Cult horror legend Barbara Steele (Black Sunday, Shivers) leads the cast of this 2012 chiller.

King Richard – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Our pick for tonight is this 2021 sports drama telling the true story of Richard Williams (Will Smith), an undeterred father with a plan to take his daughters Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) from the streets of Compton in California to the global stage as legendary tennis icons.

Released amid the Covid pandemic, King Richard’s inspiring story and powerful performances earned the movie rave reviews – it currently holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score – and six Oscar nominations, with Smith winning his first Academy Award for his work in the film.

That said, the actor’s win was heavily overshadowed by him slapping comedian Chris Rock during the awards ceremony after the latter made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett.

As well as airing on TV tonight, King Richard is available to rent on Apple TV+, Google Play and the Microsoft Store.
