Lenny Abrahamson attacks the Irish government over its lack of arts funding

Tony Cuddihy

The Room director has attacked the Irish government for their failure to adequately support the arts in this country.

Lenny Abrahamson believes Enda Kenny and the Irish government are only paying lip service to properly developing film and television in this country, using it as a ‘photo op’ and nothing more.

He started by quoting a tweet in which the Taoiseach and US vice president Joe Biden open the #ireland100 arts festival in Washington.

He then wrote about how we’re squandering the opportunity to create ‘world class’ film and television due to the government’s negligence.

Abrahamson feels that there is no understanding of the arts within Leinster House.

The very fact that Heather Humphreys is Minister for Regional Development, Rural Affairs and the Gaeltacht as well as the Arts shows how low the portfolio is on the list of the government’s priorities.

Abrahamson, nominated for Best Director Oscar for his adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel, is calling for the appointment of a dedicated Minister for the Arts.
