Lord of the Rings actor Ian Holm dies age 88

Celebrated actor Ian Holm has died at the age of 88, his agent confirmed in a statement to the Guardian.

“It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.” It was further confirmed that Holm had passed due to an illness related to Parkinson’s disease.

Holm was well-known for a variety of roles. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Chariots of Fire, starred as a malfunctioning android in the iconic sci-fi horror Alien, and later in life starred as Bilbo Baggins throughout Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He also provided the voice for Chef Skinner in the Pixar film Ratatouille.
