Netflix is about to add Love Lies Bleeding, one of JOE's favourite thriller movies of the decade so far.
The film sees rising star Katy O'Brian (Christy, The Running Man) play Jackie, a bodybuilder who arrives in a rural New Mexican town in the '80s.
Preparing for a bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas, she visits a local gym and winds up embarking on a whirlwind romance with its reclusive manager, Lou (Kristen Stewart - Spencer, Underwear).
Lou is trying to lay low because her father, Lou Sr (Top Gun and Westworld's Ed Harris, sporting a wild hairstyle), is a vicious crime lord, with whom she is estranged.
It isn't long, however, before the two lovers find themselves dragged by Lou's family into a dark and very violent web of drugs and murder.
The sophomore effort of writer-director Rose Glass (the excellent horror Saint Maud), Love Lies Bleeding's cast also features Anna Baryshnikov (Dickinson), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street) and Jena Malone (Donnie Darko).
Thanks to Glass' dazzlingly stylish direction, O'Brian and Stewart's sizzling chemistry, and the movie's twisted and twisty plot - which often spills over into shocking, visceral carnage - the film earned rave reviews upon its cinema release last year.
Holding a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can read some of the glowing write-ups for Love Lies Bleeding right here:
The Australian: "It’s a bare-knuckle ride propelled by strong performances by the ever-watchable Kristen Stewart, the physically imposing Katy O’Brian and a lean and mean Ed Harris, wearing a wig that is a fright scene all on its own."
Crooked Marquee: "With her co-writer Weronika Tofilska, director Rose Glass has made an utterly electric film; it’s exhilarating in how far and how hard it’s willing to go."
Empire: "Visceral and heady, this is a blood-soaked, all-American fable that’s as if Thelma and Louise literally went on steroids. Rose Glass is a force to be reckoned with."
The Guardian: "British film-maker Rose Glass lets rip with some pure roid-rage cinema in this uproarious, horribly violent and lethally smart noir thriller sited in the Venn diagram overlap between bodybuilding, murder and sex."
iNews.co.uk: "Rose Glass's gory sensibility is put to good use in this steroid-popping, hyper-violent love story."
Observer UK: "This is a movie that will find its people. And once it does, cult status is more or less assured."
Love Lies Bleeding will drop on Netflix in Ireland and the UK on Monday, 1 December.
