The prequel movie to The Sopranos is a must-watch for fans of the hit show.

For fans of The Sopranos, we’ve got some good news for you.

For fans of gangster movies, we’ve got some good news for you, too.

The Many Saints of Newark is available to watch at home with your NOW Cinema Membership, and here are five reasons why you should check it out this weekend.

ONE. It introduces us to a Young Tony Soprano

Mostly set in 1972, we are introduced to a teenage Tony Soprano, decades before he becomes the criminal powerhouse that we all know him to be in The Sopranos. In the show, he was played by the late, great James Gandolfini, and in a piece of genius casting, the movie sees the younger version of Tony played by James’ own real-life son, Michael Gandolfini.

We chatted to Michael about his role in the movie, and you can check out that interview in full right here:

TWO. The movie gives some major hints as to what will happen in The Sopranos

Not to get into spoiler territory here, but fans of the show will definitely notice some foreshadowing in place during the movie that won’t pay off until decades later over the course of the show.

From baby Christopher bursting into tears when young Tony is holding him, to Silvio Dante’s hairy secret, there is a lot to unpack here for Sopranos fans.

THREE. It features an incredible all-star cast

Okay. Deep breath. Michael Gandolfini is joined by Alessandro Nivola (Face/Off), Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton), Jon Bernthal (Punisher), Corey Stoll (House Of Cards), Billy Magnussen (Game Night), John Magaro (The Big Short), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) and the legend that is Ray Liotta.

We chatted to Liotta about his role in this movie and his memories of working on the similarly iconic gangster movie Goodfellas. Check out that interview in full right here:

FOUR. Fans of gangster movies should love it

It feels like it has been a while since we’ve had a big gangster movie, doesn’t it? While we all still love the likes of Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed and Pulp Fiction, it does seem like it has been a few years since the last entry into the much-loved genre.

For fans of the big, epic gangster movies, this is an absolute must-watch, regardless of whether or not you’ve seen The Sopranos before. However…

FIVE. It will make you want to go back and (re)watch The Sopranos

If you’ve never watched The Sopranos before, then now is absolutely the time to rectify that. If you have seen it before, watching this movie will likely make you want to watch it all over again.

All 86 episodes across the six seasons of The Sopranos are available to watch right now with your NOW Entertainment Membership.
